This is a beautiful book. It is not just that L.S. Baird writes like the best kind of poet, which she does. It is that Evensong’s Heir is written with the vast and sweeping strokes of an epic story, but one in which none of the small personal details are skimped. ... Valnon is a city which is gorgeous and intricate in design, an island city built on the skeletal bones of its previous incarnations, ghosts at its heart. L.S. Baird has woven the history, legends, and myths of her world right through the story, so that Evensong’s Heir comes with the temporal depth of centuries.

The world of Valnon is a complicated one, but rather than being put off by the intricacy, I found myself completely captivated... With sharp, witty dialogue and a well-rounded cast, I found myself caught up in their lives and struggles. The author does a brilliant job of bringing you in to her characters' struggles. They are real, authentic people, and I frequently found myself moved beyond words by their emotional and physical struggles.

To say that this book was a breath of fresh air is a massive understatement. The plot is exciting, fresh, 100% new. It ties in fantasy elements by using new concepts that are intriguing and interesting. The amount of detail put into it is wonderful--not just the imagery, which paints beautiful images, but with everything, including the world. Having finished it, I'm still excited over the fact that this book introduces so much fresh material to the fantasy genre.

This is a beautiful, deeply moving book. It's about music, in so many ways, and the power of music, and that essence rings off every page. It's about love, and the chemistry between Willim and his bodyguard, the rough sellsword Grayson, is electric, without it stealing focus from the story. I don't know a lot of authors who can do that, either — make a romance blossom in and around a story, rather than one that consumes the entire thing. It's also about friendship, and faith, politics and war.

L.S. Baird's debut novel showcases a story drawn equally between the worlds of action, adventure, and romance. Too much of one would dip the scales into one genre pigeonhole or the next: Baird makes such balancing look effortless... This book weaves a love ballad right in with a soldier's march, and a bright litany of brotherhood within the dirge of betrayal.
